That screen was manufactured by the South Korean giant Samsung, following certain guidelines of the US company, and the most characteristic of this screen was that it had no borders, except in the upper area. Something similar is presented by the firm BOE, a company that also manufactures OLED screens and has surprised to show a screen of more than six inches, with OLED technology and with frames, except in the same area as the iPhone X has. Now according to the latest reports, the tech giant Apple will launch in 2019 an iPhone with a 6.1-inch LCD screen that will put aside the glass back and return to a material based on metal, according to a Nikkei report. The motivation is simply to depend less on the South Korean giant Samsung, the main provider of OLED screens for the iPhone X and, in passing, reduce the cost of manufacturing or repairing the case of the smartphone. The Nikkei report is consistent with that published by Ming-Chi Kuo who says that next year the tech giant Apple will launch two new smartphones with screen sizes: 6.1 and 6.5 inches, but taking advantage of the borderless design, so that the total size of the phone is still less than the current Plus models. “The 6.1-inch LCD model will probably sport a metal back (like older iPhones) available in several colours,” said one of the sources close to the tech giant Apple, later who added that the two OLED devices will come in two different sizes: one will boast a screen size of about 6.3 inches long and the other one will boast 5.8 inches. The glass back of this year’s smartphone models have created a series of challenges for the company, of course, the tech giant Apple not only in terms of cost but also in the available colour options. In the case of the iPhone 8, it is only available in three colours: space grey, silver and gold unlike the iPhone 7 that was offered in five different colours. In the case of the iPhone X can only be purchased in two colours, grey and silver. The return to the metal, probably aluminium, would represent an important saving in costs, simplification in the manufacture and more options in colours. What is not clear is whether they will have wireless charge or not, but knowing the history of the company, surely yes. The Nikkei report says that Casetek, a subsidiary of Pegatron would be in charge of manufacturing the back of next year’s iPhones with LCD panels. Currently, they are in charge of the iPad cases. It is expected that these models, even if they have LCD or metal rear screen, will include Face ID technology, without start button and front without borders.
