The Bloomberg made known recently, that TSMC, the tech giant Apple partner to manufacture the Apple SoC, is already producing the new chip that will have the name of A12. The relevant news is the technology used.
TSMC wants to start at pole position at 7 nanometers
The published information explains that the A12 will use a 7-nanometer design that is faster, smaller and more efficient than the 10-nanometer chips used by Apple in today’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Switching to a 7-nanometer processor will allow for better performance, while also increasing efficiency and conserving internal space. This information, according to the same publication, was brought by people familiar with the production of the new chip, although Apple and TSMC refused to comment on this. TSMC previously said it started mass production of 7-nanometer processors but did not say to whom the processors were to be produced. Analysts’ comments understand this position of both companies as an attempt to gain an advantage over Qualcomm’s 7-nanometer chips. This issue is gaining ground due to the involvement of Apple and Qualcomm in a court battle. TSMC’s SoC production for the 2019 iPhones seems to be on schedule. Last year, the company also started mass production of the A11 chip in May. Today’s report also reiterates that Apple will release “at least a trio of new iPhones this fall.” One is considered a larger version of the iPhone X as well as a low-cost model with an LCD screen.
